Succulents

by Annie

Why I Chose This Topic

I chose this topic because I have a lot of plants at my house and I really like succulents. Succulents are my favorite kind of plant. My cousin has a greenhouse at his house and got me to love plants a whole lot more. Some succulents like aloe have great health benefits
Science Concept

Succulents. There are over 10,000 types of succulents in the world. Succulents are types of plants that have water storage tissue. This makes them able to survive a long time with no water. Their leaves are usually thick which helps them not use water.

Succulents have built-in sun protection on their leaves. They tend to have a waxy coating on their leaves which helps them stand against the hot sun.

The word succulent comes from the Latin sucus, meaning juice or sap. The Egyptians first used succulents as a type of medicine.

The word cactus is derived from the Greek word
kaktos, meaning spiny plant. All cacti are succulents. Cacti usually have spikey thorns and are more skinny than regular succulents.

Some succulents are flowering. Most of them boom in late spring to early summer. One cool thing about succulents is that you can grow new ones from old succulent cuttings. You can cut a piece of a plant, put it in some water, and plants it in the dirt once it grows some roots. They grow just like any other succulents. It is really fun expanding your collection just by leaf cutting.

Succulents can be many different colors. The most common ones are green, but you can find them in almost any color.

Most succulents are pest resistant. A lot of bugs are attracted to the large water content but only a few bugs are attracted to the plant itself. Aphids and Spider mites are two kinds of insects that like succulents. Most other insectsdon't pay any attention to them.

There is a special kind of succulent called a Christmas Cactus. It looks like a normal cactus but has special red leaves that look like poinsettia leaves.

Leaves tall something extra special about the plant. The smaller the leaves, the higher elevation the plant is native to. Larger leaves indicate lower elevation.

Succulents are beautiful plants that God has created and they are extremely fun to learn about.

Application

Unless you are allergic to plants, then succulents should be one of your best friends. Succulents are a good producer of oxygen which is doen through photosynthesis. They even detox the air by filtering it through their roots.

Succulents release water vapor that traps harmful particles. The water is then absorbed by the roots of the plant. The plant then cleans the air making it a better quality. NASA did a study and found out that succulents can remove up to 87% of volatile organic compounds (VOC), such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides. The two best succulent purifiers are Aloe Vera and Snake Plant.

Succulents are good to have in your home during dry winters because they are natural humidifiers. This helps with colds and sore throats.

Studies have proven that succulents can increase productivity and decrease stress and anxiety.
Aloe Vera comes from a succulent too. The most common and practical use for Aloe is for skin burns. Whether it's a sunburn or just a burn from a hot pan, then Aloe can help soothe the skin and help with the pain.

Aloe Vera juice is a good antioxidant. Drinking it can also help balance electrolyte levels and it’s a good source of vitamin C.

Aloe has been used as a medical ointment for thousands of years. It is a good way to hydrate skin. It can also help with acne and eczema.

Aloe was first known to be used by the Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. Alexander the Great and Christopher Columbus used it to treat wounds. It is even mentioned several times in the Bible. Numbers 24:6  says, “Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters."

Succulents in general are just beautiful and because of the health benefits they are good plants to have in your home.

Famous Scientist

Acanthochronology is the study of cacti. All cacti are succulents. The first person to document and describe Aloe Vera was Carl Linnaeus. He came across Aloe in 1753. It was the Egyptians first to use Aloe for its health benefits in 2,000 B.C. They used aloe as a skin moisturizer and used it to soothe burns.

Career Path

A career path that deals with succulents is a greenhouse owner. A greenhouse owner can make $50,000- $100,000 a year. While working at a greenhouse you can expect to make around $14 an hour. Greenhouses are good for the environment because they help grow good plants that aid in photosynthesis. A greenhouse that specializes in succulents is called a cactarium.
