I chose coral reefs because for one they are beautiful. The first time I saw a picture of a coral reef I immediately fell in love. My favorite part of coral reefs are all the crazy shapes and sizes. Another thing that I think is so fascinating is the amazing colors of the coral. I also think it is so amazing that fish can live and hide in the coral.
Science Concept
Coral reefs are made up of thin layers of calcium carbonate. Coral polyps are the layer that covers the coral. Fluorescent proteins are what makes up the color of the coral. Polyps slowly growing form the coral shape.
Application
There are many reasons to study coral reefs. For one is that they are amazing and beautiful with all of its amazing colors, shapes, and sizes. A reason for studying coral reefs is to protect coastlines from storms and erosion.
Career Path
Oceanographers work on coral reefs. Another career for coral reefs is a coral reef ecologist who also works on coral reefs. Oceanographers and coral reef ecologists help people like you and me better understand coral reefs and anything regarding the ocean.
