Cactus is a Greek word for clever and intelligent, cactus is a good source of medicine. Some can live 200 years even in harsh conditions. Cactus spines are not spines they are highly modified leaves. Their leaves can collect hints of water from the wind, and their leaves provide shade to slow the evaporation. The cactus plant can be classified as desert or jungle cactus. Cactus flowers are very complex, there are over 1,700 species of cactus.

APPLICATION
We need to study the cactus to study past climates and plant physiology. Another reason is it provides many homes or shelters for a wide variety of animals. Also, their roots help to stabilize the soil, when we study them we can learn how better to adapt to our surroundings.
We can also learn by relying on others we can survive the harshest conditions. The cactus pads and cactus fruit are high in Fiber; which can lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Another thing is the prickly pear cactus is promoted for treating diabetes. |

SCIENTIST
Born March 7, 1849, Luther Burbank, was an American botanist, horticulturist, and pioneer. He is famous because he discovered more than 800 strains and a variety of plants over his 55-year career. He developed the spineless cactus which is useful for cattle feed. He grew up on a farm and was the thirteenth of fifteen children. He enjoyed plants in his mother's garden, but sadly his dad died when he was 18. He bought land for a potato farm to later sell. In Santa Rosa, he bought 4 acres of land for a greenhouse nursery. Eventually died on April 11, 1926, but will live on for his great work and life.
