Popcorn Popping

Background Paper
I will be finding out what makes popcorn pop the most kernels. I will pop three
different batches of treated popcorn kernels for the same amount of time and count how
many kernels pop. The first experiment is the control where you just pop the 100
untreated  kernels, the second experiment will have untreated kernels mixed with salt
and soaked in water for 1 hour, then pat them dry, then the third experiment I will
dry 100 kernels out in the oven at 200f for 1 hour, cool, then pop them. After I pop all of
the experiments I will count all of the unpoped kernels from each experiment, then line
up all the popped popcorn, measure the length and divide by the number of popcorn to
get an average length of each popcorn.

I will be using popcorn kernels, a hot-air popper, water and an oven.

Untreated kernels mixed with ¼ c salt soak kernels for 1 hour in saturated solution of
salt water, dry kernels, then soak kernels in saturated solution of salt water, then dry
them. I will repeat each set 3 times. This will be the kernels I will use for each
experiment. In each experiment i will use exactly 100 kernels and after cooking the
kernels I will count out how many of the kernels popped and how many did not pop.
Investigation Paper
I am planning on getting around 300 untreated popcorn kernels. Then I will do 3 different experiments all in the same day.

For the first experiment I will get 100 untreated popcorn kernels and put them into a paper bag and into the microwave and see how many of them pop.

For the second experiment I will get 100 untreated kernels and mix them with salt, put them in a bowl of water and let them soak in the water for 1 hour then take them out and let them dry. After drying I will put them into a paper bag and cook it  in a microwave and see how many of them pop.

For the last experiment I will get 100 untreated kernels and put them in an oven and dry them for 1 hour then take them out of the oven and let them cool down. After cooling I will put them into a paper bag and let them cook them in a microwave and see how many of them pop.

What makes popcorn kernels pop?

First I took my untreated popcorn kernels and put them in a paper bag then put them into a microwave  and cooked them for 1 minute and 30 seconds . Then I counted all of the ones that popped and only 75 of them popped leaving 25 kernels unpopped.

The second batch I took my untreeded popcorn seeds then mixed it with 1 tb of salt. Then I soaked them in 3 cups of  water for 1 hour then patted them dry and put them in the microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds in a paper bag. Then I counted all the ones that have popped and only
86 of them popped leaving 14 kernels unpopped.

The third experiment I put 100 kernels into the oven then dried them out for 1 hour, the oven was set to 200f then I took them out and let them cool for 10 min. After they cooled I put them in a paper bag and popped them in the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds. In each experiment I used exactly 100 kernels and put them all in the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds.then i counted all the ones that have popped and only 71 kernels popped leaving 29. I did all of this experiment on the same day on January 30th.

Out of all of these experiments the second one had the most kernels pop and from my research it is because of the moisture from the water causing it to be easier to pop.

Things I used for this experiment

One tb of salt
Water
Oven
Microwave
Popcorn kernels
