Construction of a Water Filter

Science Concept & Application
My essay is about the experiment with water filtration, where I explored how different materials can filter contaminated water. I began by discussing the importance of water filtration in everyday life and then described the materials and methods I used for the experiment.
For my project, I used two Pepsi bottles, coffee filters, cotton balls, paper towels, and mason jars. I mixed tap water with pepper, thyme leaves, and garlic seasoning to create dirty water. The first filter was made of coffee filters and cotton balls, filtered the water slowly but effectively, removing the contaminants. The second filter, made of just paper towels, filtered the water faster but was less effective in removing all the debris.
Through the experiment, I was surprised that the first filter worked better than expected, despite my initial thought that the second one would perform better. As a plumber, I was interested in understanding the filtration process firsthand and enjoyed being able to build and observe your own filters in action.
Career
An industrial waste operator. Some are responsible for making sure there is an adequate supply of drinking water for their customers. Others protect public health by ensuring wastewater treatment facilities are discharging water in an environmentally safe manner to Missouri's rivers, lakes and streams.

They are very important in our life. Day to day we drink water, use it to wash ourselves and to eat and drink. We use it to clean our vehicles and our clothes. They operate and use
equipment to purify and clarify water or to process or dispose of sewage

Scientist
A famous scientist that studied water filtration is Robert Thom. he worked in 19th century sanitation. The filter he created was the slow sand filter. The filter killedThe disease that was claiming so many lives. He created a simple cheap and chemical free contraption that removes 99 percent of bacteria from water.

Since his discovery we have found many different ways to filtrate water including. Sand filters, bank filtration, membrane filtration, distillation, disinfection, and ultraviolet disinfection. Thanks to Robert thom we can drink water without issues.

Essay
My experiment is Water Filtration. Think about the last time you used water, it was probably very recent. If it wasn’t for water filtration you wouldn't be able to shower, eat, hydrate, cook, swim, etcetera. This essay I'll be talking about water filtration, and its importance in our daily lives.
They're many different ways that you can filter dirty or contaminated water. In my project that i did i had two different filters or things to grab all the dirty water. Those filters were cotton balls, a coffee filter and just paper towels.
What i used for the filters consisted of
  • 2 16 oz soda bottles
  • coffee filters
  • Cotton balls
  • 2 mason jars
The dirty or contaminated water consisted of
  • Pepper
  • Thyme leaves
  • Garlic and herb seasoning
  • And tap water
These ingredients made the water very murky, but that was all I had and all of the snow made it to where I couldn't get any dirt but the filters grabbed all of the ingredients I gave to  you but obviously we couldn't drink it but we could maybe make a soup with all of the flavors.

First I cut the bottom out of the first pepsi bottle and stuffed it with a coffee filter and cotton balls. The second pepsi bottle I also cut the bottom out of the bottle and stuffed this bottle with just a paper towel.
Next I grabbed the dirty and contaminated water and dumped it into the first of the Pepsi bottles which had cotton balls and a coffee filter. The water slowly dripped through the cotton balls and dripped out of the coffee filter.
The various ingredients I used were perfectly held back by the first filter although the drip was slow and took a while to filter. It went through fairly well without leaving a trace of the ground pepper garlic seasoning or thyme leaves. I was very surprised by this.
With the second filter it was very different. This filter consisted of just the pepsi bottle turned over into the mason jar with paper towels stuffed in the bottle to filter out the ground pepper, garlic seasoning, and thyme leaves.
I dumped the contaminated water into the second filter, but unlike the first it rushed through the paper towel and went almost instantly into the mason jar. Most of the pieces of pepper, garlic seasoning, and thyme leaves were held back but not as much as the first filter.
The second filter, filtered the contaminated water quicker. But it also did not filter it as
better as the first filter, so the first filter worked a lot better than the second filter on the fact of filtering out the bad of the water.
One of the main reasons i did the water filtration process, it's because of the fact that i am a plumber and the water filtration process interested me because i have put in water softeners and many other filters but i have never really thought about what goes on when the water goes through the filters and softeners. But with this project I was able to build my own filters and see the process really happen in front of my eyes. It was very neat.
I personally expected for the second filter to work better but I was completely shocked when the second filter consisting of the coffee filter and the cotton balls worked better. I'm very glad that i was able to work on this project and thank you for reading my essay on water filtration i hope you learned lots about my project
