Science Concept & Application
The Macaws are identified as Animalia. Macaws are typically large brightly colored birds with long tails. The characteristics that distinguishes macaws from other members of the macaw family is their bare facial areas that vary in size and pattern according to different species.
Macaws range in size from 30 cm (12 in). Hyacinth Macaws weigh approximately 1500 to 1600 g (3 to 3.5 lbs). Macaws are able to reach flying speeds of up to 56 kph (35 mph). Most macaws feed mainly on seeds, nuts, and fruits. With their powerful, vice-like bills, some macaws are even able to crack open hard-shelled foods such as Brazil nuts. Incubation time depends on the species, but typically lasts for 26 to 29 days. Most macaw females lay 1 to 3 eggs. |
Career
Ornithologists study birds. Ornithology is a branch of zoology- the study of animals. Several aspects of Ornithology differ from related disciplines, due partly to high visibility and the aesthetic appeal of birds. Studies of birds have helped develop key concepts in biology including evolution, behaviour and ecology such as the definition of species, the process of speciation, instinct, learning, and ecological niches.
Scientist
In 1808, Scottish-born poet and amateur naturalist Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) began publishing American Ornithology; or The Natural History of the Birds of the United States. Wilson’s impressive achievement inspired John James Audubon to publish his much better-known Birds of America. Alexander Wilson, identified as the “Father of American Ornithology”, Wilson is known as the greatest American ornithologist before Audubon.
