Science Concept & Application
Kiwi’s are a flightless species of bird originating from New Zealand and have been around since the Miocene Era. Kiwis vary in patterns going from spots, to lines, or just plain colors like brown and light brown. A Kiwi’s average diet consists of many different invertebrates, mainly worms of many species. Kiwi’s will also eat woodlice, millipedes, centipedes, slugs, snails, arachnids, berries, & plant material.
Kiwis shouldnt have any predators, though, since humans populated and colonized New Zealand, Common pets such as cats and dogs pose as Kiwi’s number one threat. Stouts introduced as pets from other countries also pose a great threat to kiwi chicks as cats and dogs pose a threat to adult kiwis. Due to these invasive species, Only 5% of Kiwis survive till adulthood in the wild. There are currently five different species of Kiwi, The Great Spotted Kiwi (My 3D model is based on this), The Little Spotted Kiwi, The Brown Kiwi, The Common Kiwi, And The North Island Brown Kiwi. Kiwis have no keel on their sternum bone due to how small their vestigial wings are, They are completely invisible under their bristly feathers. |
Career
The official study of birds is called Ornithology, Which includes the Kiwi bird.
Someone who studies birds and associates with them is called an ornithologist, ornithologists are sometimes even called “Birders” too. An ornithologist’s average salary is around $54,000 yearly and in some cases can rank up to $100,000+. The purpose of ornithology is to study a bird's habitat, characteristics, diet etc within a controlled or non-controlled environment. Scientist
A famous ornithologist would most definitely be George Shaw. In 1813, George Shaw officially named and discovered the genus Apteryx. The kiwi bird was put into this genus and originally named “The Southern Apteryx” before being renamed to the Southern Brown Kiwi. He greatly contributed to the study of New Zealand ornithology and ornithology in general.
