Science Concept & Application
The ghost orchid was discovered in 1854 by Mrs. W. Anderton. It is in the family Orchidaceae. Unlike most flowers the ghost orchids’ petals are not petals at all, they are scales. The orchid itself only blooms once a year for a few weeks, and some don’t even get the chance to bloom at all. While other flowers grow entirely from the ground, the ghost orchid grows more as a fungus, climbing on trees and clinging to their bark. The reasoning behind the name of the ghost orchid is because the orchid itself looks like it's floating in the jungles where it’s found.
Due to its small and slim stem, it makes it very hard to see in the green background of the jungle. Because of its rarity the ghost orchid faces poachers in its natural habitat. But the habitat itself is under attack due to the expansion of cities and towns. There are many wildlife preserves where these beautiful flowers still thrive today because of the big cypress foundation in florida. But just remember the nex time you go outside, that God made everything, even the ghost orchid. Now we will talk about what botany is and why it's important. Botany is the study of the growth and structure of plants. Botanists also study the reproductive system of plants and trees. They also do field work figuring out what is going on within the earth, and how they can help with the growth of the plants that live there. Botany plays a crucial role in discovering how plants grow, reproduce, and how they can help the human race either as food, bug repellent, or decoration. |
Career
A botanist is a person who studies plants and molecular biology. Along with studying this, they also study how to make plants grow stronger and produce food, flowers, and seeds more efficiently. Botanists play a big role in how we grow our gardens and other plants such as house plants and flowers in your garden bed. Botanists make around 65-to-110 k. yearly according to glassdoor.com.
Scientist
There have indeed been many famous botanists throughout history, but the two I am honoring are Mrs. Emma Lucy Braune, and David Bellamy. They both were world renowned botanists who studied and discovered many of the plants we have today. For instance, Emma Braun discovered the Moraea Tricolor, or African tulip. Bellamy discovered Cyrtandra Vittata, or just Cyrtandra. Emma is also famous for studying the deciduous forests of the eastern United States. Both Emma Lucy Braun and David Bellamy were amazing botanists who remind us that God has given us all that's on earth and all that's beyond.
