Science Concept & Application
Chickens are amazing creatures, they also help us as well. Chickens originated from the forests/jungle of Southeastern Asia from the creature known as the red jungle fowl. If you were to see a picture of it you would probably say isn't that a rooster. That is probably because they are just wild versions of chickens that were domesticated around seven thousand years ago by the people in southeast Asia to help with food needs.
There are several reasons why we need to study chickens. A few of the reasons why we need to study chickens are food, their meat and egg provide fiber protein and nutrition for us. Besides food chickens are needed elsewhere as well. Sometimes scientists use chickens instead of rats because several of the diseases that hurt and harm humans also harm chickens. So by putting the diseases into chickens they can better get cures and also to see what the disease does to us. Chickens have provided us with valuable insights into development of the nervous system, showing how cells migrate and differentiate. They have also helped us understand limb disorder and the molecular basis of limbs which in birds are similar to humans. Another reason why we study chickens is because of their high intelligence. Chickens are very self-aware and can distinguish between themselves and others. They all teach one another such as a chick learns from its mother. A few examples are telling what is dangerous, what food is good to eat, and where to be safe such as sleeping places. Also chickens have been known to solve complex problems by themselves. In general chickens help everyone and everything around them. They are easy to farm, they give a lot back to the earth as well. Chickens supply us with food, eggs and meat, along with feathers. Besides helping humans chickens help the planet, their waste is a very good compost and supplies the plants they eat with nutrients. They are great pets because they are calm and easy to house. There are several reasons to study chickens and what is written above is only a little about them. Chickens are great and amazing creatures. |
Career
Besides zoology, chickens are in poultry science as well. Poultry scientists conduct research to improve poultry production efficiency, focusing on areas such as genetics, nutrition, and disease prevention. Other than that there are other parts of poultry science, such as bioscience, distribution, environmental quality and safety, food safety, and many more. The average poultry scientist in the state of Missouri makes $10,170 a month which is roughly $122,050 a year.
Scientist
A famous poultry scientist is Robert Carl Baker. He lived from December 29, 1921 - March 13, 2006. He was an American inventor and Cornell University professor. Robert invented the chicken nugget and other chicken products. He is a member of the American Poultry Hall of Fame due to his contributions to poultry science.
